Tuesday, 1 July, will see the biggest change in the history of Turku’s public transport network when the new trunk lines, numbered 1–10, begin to operate. This changes the public transport network in Turku completely with new line numbers and routes. The bus stop infrastructure will also see changes.

Like other large cities, the population in Turku has grown rapidly in recent years. What the city is doing to prepare for further population growth includes the changes to its public transport system. With the introduction of the trunk line network, Föli’s traffic volume will grow by 20%. Growth centres in particular will see more public transport.

The new trunk line network forms the backbone of the public transport network. They, at times, run so frequently that you may not even need to check the time or the bus timetable when you leave for the stop. In addition to trunk lines, there are also many other bus routes that support the trunk lines.

Trunk lines – more connections and improved traffic flow

As the trunk line network opens, passengers will have to learn new line numbers. We have reserved numbers 1–19 for new and potential trunk lines. The 20, 30 and 40 series of lines complement the trunk lines. Lines 50-59 will operate in Hirvensalo, and lines 60-79 will be school lines. Numbering for the regional lines will not change. The local lines of other Föli municipalities will also not change – Paimio is the only exception with the letter code changing from PA to P.

The trunk line network makes everyday mobility in Turku easier and faster. It improves accessibility in the Föli area and boosts the service level of public transport.

-“The trunk line network boosts the attractiveness of public transport and improves commuting by public transport. These changes support the long-term development of the region,” says Lauri Jorasmaa, Acting Director of Public Transport at Föli.

The new ring trunk line adds new travel options, as its route is a ring around the city. Before, passengers had to transfer between Föli lines at the Market Square, trunk line 10 allows considerably more flexible and efficient transfers at other trunk line intersections.

-“Line 10 is an excellent service for commuters to Perno Shipyard or Kupittaa and travellers to Kupittaa station. Its route also has a stop at TYKS. During weekday peak hours, 10 and 10A run every 15 minutes and every 20–30 minutes on weekends. In other words, on sections where the 10 and 10A routes coincide, the frequency can be as low as 7.5 minutes on weekdays,” says Jorasmaa.

Get to know the routes and timetables

The new routes and timetables have been available since spring in the trunk line journey planner at runkolinjasto-reittiopas.foli.fi (Opens in a new tab). You can view new routes, check stops, and examine the timetables for the base season of the trunk line network between 11 August 2025 and 31 May 2026 in the trunk line journey planner. The summer timetables of the trunk line network will be available in the current journey planner from 1 July at reittiopas.foli.fi (Opens in a new tab). Both journey planners will remain available until 30 June, when the trunk line planner closes.

There is a page on the Föli website at foli.fi/en/trunklines with comprehensive information on the trunk line network and the details of everything that’s changing. On that page, you will find a map link with all new Föli routes; Föli route map (Opens in a new tab) from 1 July 2025.

You will also find PDFs of traditional timetables on the Föli website. We also continue to prepare timetable books, which you can pick up at the Föli Service Office.

-“We have printed an unusually large number of timetable books this season. In addition, the service offices and buses will have trunk line brochures in nine different languages. You can also read about the trunk line network at our plain-language website. We have made a significant effort to ensure that everyone can get information in a suitable form,” says Jorasmaa.

The Föli chat at foli.fi will have extended service hours on the first week of the trunk line network. The chat is open on Monday, 30 June at 10:00–20:00, Tuesday, 1 July at 5:00–20:00, Wednesday at 5:00–20 and Thursday at 5:00–17:00. The chat will also be open from early morning to evening on back-to-school week. Outside the service hours (10:00–17:00), the chat provides advice on trunk lines and routes. The telephone service is open Monday to Thursday at 10:00–17:00 and Fridays at 10:00–16:00.

New Föli trunk line numbers are 1–10

The numbers of the new Föli trunk lines are 1/1A, 2, 3/3A, 4, 5/5A, 6/6A, 8, 9/9A and 10/10A. In addition to the number, each line has a unique colour, which is featured on bus stops and the journey planner.
