How has accessibility been taken into account in buses?
From this page, you can find more information about the accessibility of Föli buses.
Föli traffic strives to take into account the needs of as many people as possible. For this reason, almost all Föli buses are low-floor city buses. There are no steps between the front entrance and the entrance in the middle of the bus, which makes it easier for passengers to board the bus and move around inside.
There are seats reserved on the buses for specific groups, such as older passengers, people with mobility or sensory impairments, and those travelling with small children. These seats are located near the entrances. It is courteous to give up your seat to someone who needs it more.
Regional traffic
Regional lines 413, 612, 614, 615, 720, 720P, 721, 721S, 722, 722S, 723, 723H, 723S, 901, 902 and 903 are operated with high-floor buses that have steps at the middle door.
These lines do not have space for pushchairs or wheelchairs.
Minibuses
Lines L10, L11, L13, N6, N8, N9, N10, N11 and N12 are mainly operated using high-floor minibuses with no space for pushchairs or wheelchairs.
Lines K2, K6, L8, L9, N1, N3, N6 (during school holidays), N7, N13, V2 and V3 are operated with low-floor minibuses. There is no step between the front and middle doors, which makes it easier to board the bus and move inside it. Low-floor minibuses have limited space, which means that only one wheelchair or pushchair can be taken on board at a time.
Demand-responsive bus traffic also use low-floor minibuses. The exceptions are line N11 and line N6 on school days.
Errand lines in Turku
In the Turku city area, there are also service routes that are available to everyone. Service lines 41–46 run via key services such as health centres, shopping areas and assisted living facilities.
Unlike other public transport services, the buses on these service routes may also stop outside official bus stops, within the blue-marked areas shown on the route map.
You can check the routes and blue areas of the service lines by clicking here (Opens in a new tab).
Walkers
Passengers who use a walker may board a bus using the entrance in the middle of the bus, but they must go to the front of the bus to use the travel card reader or purchase a single ticket. If necessary, they may request assistance from other passengers or the driver.
Customers who use a walker may travel on Föli buses and water buses free of charge Monday to Friday 9 am–12:59 pm. The rate charged is defined based on the actual time of stepping onto the bus; not based on the scheduled departure of the bus or the estimated bus stop timetables.
However, the buses cannot be guaranteed to have enough space even during the day if there are already, for example, pushchairs or several walkers on board.
Wheelchairs
Persons seated in wheelchairs and their escorts may travel free of charge. The escort of a person who has a disability travel card entitling them to an escort may also travel free of charge.
Electric scooters or mopeds are not transported on buses for safety reasons.
Traveling with children
Pushchairs and prams
Those who are transporting a child in a pushchair or pram can use buses free of charge.
The child does not need to be in the pushchair when boarding the bus or during travel. They can also sit on a bus bench or be in a baby sling, for example. If this is the case, please ensure that the child remains seated on a bench safely. The adult must take care of the child and the pushchair for the duration of the journey. The wheels of the pushchair must be locked, and if the child sits in the pushchair, the adult must stay next to the pushchair and make sure it stays in place. Please exit the bus together with the child or let the child exit first. The driver will not necessarily notice a child left alone in the bus via the mirrors.
Please note that if you are not travelling with a pushchair or stroller, but the child is in a baby sling or carrier, the trip must be paid for normally. Children under the age of 7 travel free of charge when accompanied by a paying passenger or by someone transporting a child in a pushchair.
Child safety seats on buses
Some Föli buses are equipped with child safety seats. These seats can be found on the lines operated by Nobina: 3, 3A, 6, 6A, 24, 25, 25A, 33, 33A, 50, 50A, 51, 51A, 52, 53, 72, 75 and 220.
Each bus has two safety seats, located at the front of the vehicle and firmly attached to the seats. Their purpose is to make travelling by bus safer for babies and young children.
Visually impaired people
When boarding a bus, a visually impaired person may ask the driver for assistance with using the travel card reader. The driver will also tell the passenger the amount of money remaining on the card. In regular city buses, the designated seats for passengers with visual impairments are located near the front doors.
If a visually impaired person has a disability travel card that entitles them to be escorted by another person, the escort may travel with them free of charge.
