Turku Tramway
The Turku Tramway is a comprehensive urban development project that defines the development of Turku and the urban region over decades.
On 2 October 2023, the Turku City Board decided on the transition to the implementation planning of the Port–Varissuo tramway.
The City Council will make the final investment decision based on the tramway implementation plan, the more detailed impact assessments and the binding cost estimate that will be completed in early 2026. The City Council is expected to make the decision on the tramway in June 2026 at the latest.
The implementation planning and possible construction of the Turku tramway will be carried out by the Turku Tramway Alliance, which includes Turun Raitiotie Oy, the City of Turku (Opens in a new tab), NRC Group Finland Oy (Opens in a new tab), GRK Suomi Oy (Opens in a new tab), Ramboll Finland Oy (Opens in a new tab) and Sweco Finland Oy (Opens in a new tab). Turun Raitiotie Oy is a company owned by the City of Turku, which is the principal contractor responsible for the implementation plan phase of the tramway.
The Tramway as a part of Föli
The Tramway would complement Turku’s public transport system as a part of Föli, allowing passengers to use the same ticket for a combined bus and tram journey, for example. Population growth estimates show that the number of passengers in Turku’s public transport will increase. A tram can carry many passengers. It would, therefore, add capacity that buses alone cannot do.
