Traffic on Föli's new trunk line network will be launched next summer on 1 July 2025. The trunk line update will see the routes and line numbers of Turku's internal traffic change. Trunk lines will form the foundation of the new route system. These trunk lines will at times run so frequently that you can go to the stop, without even looking at a timetable. In addition to trunk lines, traffic supporting trunk lines, in the form of connecting lines and supplementary lines will also be driven. School lines, the internal traffic of other Föli municipalities and regional traffic will be operated as before.

The trunk line network update will bring with it a large number of new lines, about 20% more traffic and a more accessible urban area. In the future, summer timetables will only be valid during the school summer holidays and not from April to September, as they are currently. The trunk line update will increase the attractiveness of public transport and improve commuting by public transport and thus reduce the need for passenger cars in the Turku region. A total of 180,000 Föli area residents live along the trunk lines, at a distance of no more than 400 metres from a trunk line stop.

Line numbering and routes to change in Turku

In connection with the trunk line update, passengers will have to learn new line numbers. The numbers 1-19 are now reserved for trunk lines and any new trunk lines. Bus lines 20-29 will supplement the trunk lines, driving through the Market Square, while lines 30-39 will supplement the trunk lines outside the Market Square area. Bus lines 40-49 will run supplementary traffic, and some of these routes will be the same as those of current service lines. Bus lines 50-59 will operate in the Hirvensalo area and bus lines 60-79 will be school lines. The numbering of internal lines in surrounding municipalities will not change, nor will the numbering of regional lines. The exception to this will be Paimio, where a P will be added to the numbers of internal lines.

The trunk line network will facilitate and speed travel in the Turku region. The new ring trunk line will add new travel options, as it will run round the city in a ring shape; ring line 10 will run on the route Uittamo, Skanssi, Kupittaa, Länsikeskus, Harbour and ring line 10A on the route Uittamo, Skanssi, Kupittaa, Mylly, Raisio, Perno. In other words, the line does not travel through the Market Square.

The aim of the line update is to improve the flow of travel in the Turku area and improve the accessibility of the entire Föli area and the service level of public transport. Customer information, bus stop infrastructure and the bus fleet will also be updated in connection with the line update. The new line network and its service hours will meet changing mobility needs better than the current line network.

Trunk line update planned with a tramway in mind

Concurrent with the trunk line update, Turku is in the final phase of planning a tramway before its possible construction. The tramway will be built if, in late 2025, Turku City Council decides to invest in it. Föli's trunk line update will meet the demand for public transport today, as the tramway will in the future. As the area's population grows, the frequency of the trunk lines cannot be increased sufficiently without causing congestion. This means that the line network update has been planned with a tramway in mind. The changes implemented for trunk line update, such as new bus stops, will remain as they are, even if the decision is made to build a tramway.
