BEST (Benchmarking in European Service of Public Transport) is a European cooperation network that carries out an annual survey to gauge the satisfaction of residents of its member cities with public transport. In 2024, 11 cities were included in the survey. 11 cities were Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Geneva, Rotterdam, Bergen (Vestland), Trondheim, Tampere, Turku and Reykjavik. The survey looks at the following factors that influence satisfaction: transport services, reliability, information, safety, travel comfort, social image and value for money.
Eighty-one percent of respondents were satisfied with Föli. The most satisfied respondents were frequent travellers, with 85% of those who travelled daily and 88% of those who travelled a few times a week.
With good and efficient public transport, we want to make people's mobility and everyday lives easier, so it is of course great to have such survey results year after year. This is the fifth time that Föli has participated in the survey and in all five years we have been the best of all cities in terms of overall satisfaction, although this time we share the top spot with Geneva," says Sirpa Korte, Director of Public Transport Services.
The average overall satisfaction score for all cities was 63% of respondents. Among Finnish cities, Tampere and Helsinki are also among the top performers. In Tampere, 79% of respondents are satisfied with the transport system in Nysse and 75% with the transport system in the Helsinki region.
Special satisfaction among Turku residents is expressed with Föli's transport services and travel comfort. Föli did very well in the comparison when residents were asked how well they feel they get value for money. 74% of respondents were satisfied with the ticket products and value for money. The average for all cities in this category was 49%.
Föli scored better than last year when customers were asked about the effectiveness of information. Almost 80% think that information is readily available when planning a journey, and 52% are satisfied with the information provided in case of disruptions, compared to 46% in 2023.
The social importance of public transport is seen as high, with 82% of Turku respondents believing that increased use of public transport is necessary to reduce traffic congestion and 81% of respondents agreeing that increased use of public transport is necessary to meet climate objectives.
This survey result was gratifying. It is great to see that local residents feel that the environment and climate issues are important. With the start of trunk line services this summer, Föli will see an increase in traffic of around 20% and travel will be made easier thanks to the frequent trunk lines. The route reform will enable more people to use public transport for commuting, for example," says Korte.
The survey was conducted electronically during 2024. 602 Turku residents from the Föli area responded to the survey.
