Paimio Sanatorium designed by Alvar Aalto and the Preitilä trail
A masterpiece of Finnish architecture and one of Finland's nationally significant built cultural environments, the Paimio Sanatorium, stands surrounded by the majestic pine trees of Paimio. Originally built as a tuberculosis sanatorium in the 1930s, this prime example of functionalism was designed by architect Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino Aalto.
The trip to the Sanatorium can be combined with a hike on the Preitilä trail, which consists of the Sanatorium trail, the Paimio nature trail and the connecting trail between them. In its entirety, the Preitilä trail is approximately 11 km long. There is a lean-to and a hut with campfire sites along the route. The trail starts from right next to the Sanatorium. The marked trail running in the immediate vicinity of the Sanatorium winds through the forest, and the surroundings vary from handsome pinewoods to a lush, fairytale-like brook valley. This 2.2-km Sanatorium trail is marked with clear orange signs. You can also choose to take a shortcut to shorten it to approximately 1 km.
